What
is the purpose of KIDS VOTING? Teaching students to be
good citizens who are able to function in the adult world is
a main goal of education. KIDS VOTING, a nonpartisan
program for K-12th grades, helps educate students to be
responsible, informed adults who participate in their
community through voting and civic involvement. This is
done through classroom activities and an Election Day voting
experience at the real adult polls.

Why
should you do KIDS VOTING?
Teaching students to be productive adults who care about the
world around them is basic to education. KIDS VOTING
provides the tools to help make students more aware,
informed, and involved people who participate in their
community in a meaningful way. The activities are fun and
have also been aligned with the NC Standard Course of
Study for Social Studies, Language Arts, and Math.

How
does KIDS VOTING work in your school?
KIDS VOTING is used in both public and private schools in
Guilford County. Each school has a KIDS VOTING Contact
whose responsibility it is to obtain the materials for the
teachers at your school and assist you with knowing how to
use them most effectively.

Should you try to
involve students’ families in the activities?
Yes! The Civic Index done a few years ago by the NC Civic
Education Consortium indicates that parents are the most
influential civics teachers of their children. Any
activity that will generate family participation and
discussion is beneficial to both the students and the
family.

Should you recommend
that students go to the KIDS VOTING polls on November 4?
Definitely! Students in K-8th grades should be accompanied
by a parent or other adult. High school students may vote
unaccompanied. This will provide a great hands-on learning
experience for them. Some teachers assign their students to
go to the polls, giving an alternate assignment as well for
students whose parents can’t or won’t take them to the
polls.

election season.

Will KIDS VOTING polls
also be available at the early voting sites? Yes.
The early sites will be unstaffed “self service” voting
areas set up at all the early voting sites for student
voters. Because there will be no volunteers present at
these sites to assist students, there will be written
directions to guide the students and any adults accompanying
them. These KIDS VOTING areas are available for any student
who can’t or don’t want to go to the regular precinct polls
on Election Day.

Can students whose parents aren't
registered to vote or who aren't citizens participate?
Yes! Every K-12th
grade student in Guilford County may vote at the KIDS VOTING
polls on Election Day or at the early voting sites
regardless of whether their parents are eligible to vote.

Is anything done with the results
from the KIDS VOTING election?
Yes!
The ballots are tabulated on election night, and the results
will be added to the KIDS VOTING website
as soon as possible after the election. The results are
also sent to the media, so you might also find them in the
news media. Additionally, KIDS VOTING tracks the number of
students who vote from each school and how many vote at each
poll.
